Last updated on: 2009-05-14 Africa and United Nations (UN) Public Service Day, 23 June 2009The UN General Assembly, in its Resolution 57/277, designated 23 June as Public Service Day (A/RES/57/277). The UN followed the long standing African convention of celebrating the Public Service on this particular day. The UN Public Service Day intends to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community; highlight the contribution of public service in the development process; recognize the work of public servants, and encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector.
MDIs are encouraged to organise their own celebration events and inform the AMDIN secretariat of these. The Conference for African Ministers of Public Service/Administration has decided to focus this year’s celebrations around the theme: "Delivery of Quality Service for Sustainable Development".
The UN runs a special programme to celebrate public service day 2009. For details see: http://unpan1.un.org/intradoc/groups/public/documents/un-dpadm/unpan034580.pdf or visit the African Public Service Day website: http://www.estabs.go.tz/apsd/
